Turtle Bay Resort sits on 1,300 acres of North Shore coastline — rugged cliffs, white sand beaches, swaying palms, and the kind of dramatic ocean scenery that makes Hawaii famous. It's one of our favorite venues to photograph, and for good reason.
The Setting
Unlike the calm lagoons of Ko Olina, Turtle Bay has energy. The waves crash against lava rock cliffs, the wind moves through the palms, and the sky feels enormous. Couples who want a dramatic, adventurous feel to their wedding photos absolutely love this venue.
The resort sits on Oahu's north-facing coastline, which means the light is different from west-facing venues. Rather than direct golden-hour sunset light, you get beautiful side-lighting and dramatically atmospheric sky conditions — particularly gorgeous in winter when swell and clouds roll in from the north.
Best Photo Locations at Turtle Bay
The cliff overlooks — Turtle Bay's most dramatic feature. Jagged lava rock cliffs with the Pacific crashing below and a 180-degree ocean horizon. Silhouette shots here at sunset are extraordinary.
The beach cove — Tucked below the bluffs, this small sandy cove is more intimate than the main beach. Beautiful for romantic portraits with natural rock framing.
The resort lawn — Manicured oceanfront lawn with panoramic views. Perfect for ceremony and wider formal portraits with the ocean behind you.
The beach itself — White sand, clear water, and the dramatic North Shore sky. More raw and wild than Waikiki or Ko Olina beaches.
Wind tip: The North Shore can be significantly windier than leeward Oahu. Plan hair and wardrobe accordingly. Honestly, wind at Turtle Bay often adds beautiful movement and energy to photos — don't fight it, embrace it.
Best Times to Shoot at Turtle Bay
Turtle Bay faces north and northeast, which means golden hour light is indirect — the sky and horizon light up beautifully but you don't get the direct warm sun on your face the way you do at Ko Olina. This creates a different but equally beautiful quality of light.
Late afternoon is our preferred time for ceremonies — about 2 hours before sunset. The light is warm and dramatic, the crowds on the beach thin out, and you have the golden window for portraits before the sun drops.
Early morning at Turtle Bay is also extraordinary — empty beaches, soft light, and a quality of stillness that the afternoon doesn't have. If you're planning an elopement or intimate ceremony, consider a sunrise session.
North Shore Weather
The North Shore receives more rainfall than the leeward coast. Winter months (November–February) can bring larger surf, more rain, and dramatic skies — which actually creates spectacular photographic conditions. Summer is calmer and drier.
We've photographed beautiful weddings at Turtle Bay in every season and every weather condition. The venue's indoor spaces provide excellent backup options when needed.
Travel & Logistics
Turtle Bay Resort is approximately 45–55 minutes from Honolulu depending on traffic. We charge a small North Shore travel fee for this venue. We always build in ample travel time and arrive early to scout conditions.
